Therapy Rates & Payment Options at The Anxious Owl

Therapy is an investment in your well-being. At The Anxious Owl, I believe that access to care should be straightforward, transparent, and centered around your needs—not dictated by insurance requirements.

Session Rates & Payment

  • Standard Session (50 minutes): $200

  • Payment is due at the time of the session via Client Portal.

  • Accepted payment methods: all major credit cards, HSA/FSA cards, and cash.

Reduced Rate Options: I reserve a limited number of reduced-rate spots for clients with financial need. If cost is a barrier, please inquire to see if one of these openings is available. Clients seeking suicide-related support are especially encouraged to reach out.

Good Faith Estimate (GFE): In compliance with the No Surprises Act, all self-pay clients receive a Good Faith Estimate of expected costs before beginning treatment.

Why I Don’t Bill Insurance Directly

Care Based on Your Needs, Not a Diagnosis

Insurance companies require “medical necessity,” which means therapy must fit a DSM diagnosis to be covered. This creates unnecessary barriers for many people seeking support. With private pay, care is based on your needs, not what an insurance company decides.

Prevention Counts Too

You don’t have to wait until life feels overwhelming or until symptoms meet full diagnostic criteria to start therapy. Preventative treatment allows us to work together on stress, anxiety, or life changes before they escalate into something more severe.

Diagnosis with Care Or No Diagnosis at All

When appropriate, a diagnosis can be provided and included on a superbill for potential reimbursement. But if a diagnosis isn’t needed or helpful, private pay allows us to focus on skill-building, insight, and resilience without the pressure of labeling.

Transparent Payments

What you see is what you pay. No hidden fees, no surprise bills, and no waiting for insurance to decide what’s covered.

Flexible Scheduling & Treatment

Private pay means you aren’t limited by session caps or rigid treatment plans imposed by insurers. Together, we decide the frequency and length of sessions, whether weekly, biweekly, or monthly, based on your goals and progress.

Confidentiality You Can Trust

Insurance billing requires sharing your diagnosis and treatment details. Private pay keeps your information confidential, with records staying between you and your therapist.

Private Pay Benefits Checklist

Why I Don’t Accept Insurance & How Private Pay Benefits You

Private pay therapy ensures treatment is based on your unique needs, not restricted by insurance definitions of “medical necessity.” With private pay:

  • You can access therapy for prevention, personal growth, or support through life challenges, even without a diagnosis.

  • A diagnosis is provided if clinically appropriate, and you’d like to use it for reimbursement.

  • Payments are transparent with no surprise bills.

  • Sessions and frequency are flexible to fit your goals.

  • Your information remains private without insurance involvement.

Out-of-Network Benefits & Superbills

While I don’t bill insurance directly, many clients use Out-of-Network (OON) benefits. Here’s how it works:

  1. You pay for your session at the time of service.

  2. I provide you with a superbill (a detailed receipt).

  3. You submit it to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.

  4. Reimbursement depends on your plan’s OON coverage.

Tip: Contact your insurance provider before starting therapy to ask about deductibles, reimbursement rates, session limits, and whether pre-authorization is required.

Questions to Ask Your Insurance About OON Coverage

If You Want to Use Out-of-Network Benefits

While I don’t directly bill insurance, I provide superbills you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. Because every plan is different, I encourage clients to call their provider directly and ask specific questions about out-of-network coverage.

To make this easier, I created a Questions to Ask Your Insurance About OON Coverage Checklist you can download and use during your call.
